"Wooden" would be the best word to sum up this movie. And if you were looking for a badly made budget movie that shouted "cheap" at you, starting here would save you time. But if there was a reason for watching it, it would be to see rubber bayonets in action. And everybody is so clean. The Great War (2019) falls flat despite its ambitious subject matter. Intended as a gritty World War I drama, it suffers from weak acting, stiff dialogue, and a script that struggles to build any emotional connection. The performances feel wooden, making it hard to care about the characters or their mission. Attempts to create a tense, heroic atmosphere are undercut by clumsy writing and flat, heavy-handed exchanges that drag down the pacing. Visually, the film looks more like a low-budget reenactment than a serious war movie. Battle scenes lack intensity, with poor production values and staging that never sells the chaos of war. Although the story aimed to spotlight the often-overlooked contributions of Black soldiers in WWI — a noble idea — the execution is too sluggish and amateurish to leave much of an impact. In the end, The Great War feels like a wasted opportunity.
