Plot summary

Joe Keegan is the 'Rocky' of stand-up comedy. A fifteen-year comedy veteran who was pegged for stardom early on in his career but has blown every major audition he has ever had in legendary fashion. Fresh off a recent fiasco with a heckler that included a broken nose, Joe's friend Kenny tells him he can get them an audition for 'The Tonight Show' and that it's 'a can't miss.' The one catch is that it's at a roadside bar in tiny Pine Lake, Wisconsin, hometown of Tonight Show Talent scout, Harvey Skorik who never misses 'Rocktoberfest.' Having doubts but needing a break from L.A., Joe reluctantly agrees to go. Arriving in Wisconsin, Joe bombs his first night on stage when local emcee Dug sabotages him. Joe cannot get a break until he encounters his former high school English teacher, the beautiful Molly Mahoney who is also at a crossroads in her life.

I did an Alexa voice search to watch

I did an Alexa voice search to watch the packers who are playing today, and instead of putting the packers on, it said "playing the godfather of Green Bay" I found t turn it off because I wanted to see what Hollywood did to the typical northeast woods type bar, in Wisconsin. I'm halfway through it and I'm unclear of the direction of the movie, not a strong plot or it's not prevalent enough. But I am having a few laughs and oddly at least around the time this was made, it's not far off. Lol

Back when comedians still wanted sitcoms, this mid-2000s

Back when comedians still wanted sitcoms, this mid-2000s road-trip comedy definitely has its moments. It's low-budget and leans heavy into the lowest denominator of Wisconsinite stereotypes, but also has interesting commentary on stand-up: being "authentic," prop acts, etc. The "Godfather" (Tony Goldwyn), the beloved local who reminds everyone he meets that he was once the best high school football players in Northeast Wisconsin, is quite the character — his line, "Go play my song. I want her to see me dance." Is pretty great, even if it's stupid that his song is "The Macarena". At first, the Mafia side-story felt unnecessary, however, the way it connected to the larger plot added to the "everybody knows everybody in a small town" concept. The penultimate scene of Joe (Pete Schwaba) getting bumped is jarring (+$1), but works. The actual ending is fine, I guess. If you like Thomas Lennon (Lt. Dangle from RENO 911), there's lots of him in it; if you like Bill Ponderosa from Always Sunny, Lance Barber is the "funny guy" to Joe's "straight man". It's only 90 mins and you'll def laught-out-loud at least a couple of times — at what exactly depends on your sense of humor.
