Plot summary

Unlike movies like The Puppet Master or Chucky

Unlike movies like The Puppet Master or Chucky, where the doll is are depicted as if real, the elements of this movie are quite surrealistic and absurd. And it lends to the premise in a delightful way, building tension because you cannot predict what might happen next. The characters are memorable and engaging enough, and the effects of the scary stuff is really well executed, building to a fun way to tell an old story and a delight to watch.

Finally! Something scratched my itch

Finally. Something that actually scratched the itch.This feels like a movie made by people who love this kind of stuff, not something trying to fake it. The puppets, the stop-motion, all the practical effects... it's messy in a good way and way more fun because of it.The performances are kind of the secret weapon here. Everyone's leaning into it just enough. It's campy, a little unhinged, but it works. Nobody's playing it safe, and that makes the whole thing way more entertaining to watch.It's funny, it's gross, and then it'll randomly get tense when you're not expecting it. There's this chaotic energy running through the whole thing that kept me locked in.Definitely not for everyone, but if you're into weird, practical-effect-heavy horror with some personality, this one hits.

A horror movie with no horror

Acting by all parties is subpar, ranging from somewhat amateurish to very much so (the lady lawyer reading the will and the postman delivering the candy basket couldn't be much worse). The movie itself is barely watchable, with many unnecessarily extended scenes.Which brings us to the main point of this horror movie. Where's the horror? The initial hint of "horror" in the bathroom scene gives you the idea that okay, we might have something here, but no, it gets no better.However, the cinematography is good and the sets are very artistic and creative. Too bad that's not enough to carry this movie. I have to give this one a "seriously, don't watch."
