This Keaton short is reportedly a cinematic character assassination of William S. Hart in retaliation for the Western star's public statements against Buster's friend and colleague, Roscoe Arbuckle, during his famous criminal proceedings involving the deceased Virginia Rappe. He definitely skewers his acting style and paints the "good bad guy" as an objectively bad guy, minus the good. There is also a brief laugh at the expense of Erich von Stroheim, which I found amusing. Contemporaneous audiences apparently found this to be a scream, but most of the comedic elements have faded with age and there is little left to recommend it to modern viewers.

Buster Keaton is the Villain

'The Frozen North' is far from being Buster Keaton's best works in the short film, but it is one of his most interesting ones. This is the only time when Buster Keaton plays a villain in his own movie. Although 'The Frozen North' parodies westerns and melodramas of that era (especially those of William S. Hart), the bad guy is the bad guy. The film includes some very genius little gags and some quite surreal ones (in the opening scene where Buster Keaton exits the subway station in the middle of the North Pole). Although not the favorite one of most of the Buster Keaton's fans 'The Frozen North' is interesting (and way different) work of great comedic genius.
