Plot summary

Macho Lawrence 'Larry' Hammer and frailer Dean Mazzoli initially rival as U.S. Navy SEAL trainees, but become buddies in instructor chief petty officer Bosco's merciless training class. The friends date two girls, but both love Barbara, who chooses to marry Larry, as ideal father for her pre-teen son. After graduation from Basic UDT/SEAL training, they choose opposite oceans for further training. However Sadam Husein's invasion of Kuwait gets both mobilized in the same unit, with Bosco, who gets captured and tortured. Dean learns Barbara has left adulterer Larry. They mount a rescue together, taking risks even on their own side.

I only wish this one was reduced to

I only wish this one was reduced to The Finest Minute. What a piece of bombastic, flag waving sausage. Another tribute to the Navy S.e.a.l.s. , they get involved in fighting that super power known as ...... Iraq? See real footage of ex-president George Bush greeting the troops. All in all, pretty standard fare, this one has a romatic subplot as well with two friends involved with the same woman. I can't restrain myself, this one hit rock bottom with me about 15 minutes into the film. Two Navy S.E.A.L.S. are sent on a dangerous mission to destroy an Iraqi missile installation containing chemical warheads aimed at the U.S. ships entering the Persian Gulf. A must for Gale Hansen fans

Gale Hansen features in this a lot in spite of being second billed on the credits. He is good with the role that is, unfortunately, limited in any interesting dialogue. In fact the whole film lacks creative flair, which is a pity because it is quite a good story line with some good actors. The overall production is clichéd and, at times, boring. Yet the two story lines, triangular love affair and strategic target of an Iraqi base with chemical weapons, had a lot of potential. The military one is handled better than the love affair which required a greater deftness of touch than the director or screen play allowed.

There are lots of close-up shots of Gale (and Rob Lowe) and he plays the more rounded and sympathetic character though the camaraderie between his character - Mazzoli - and Rob's - Hammer - is good.

My rating (6/10) is for Gale and the overall acting rather than the film itself.
