Plot summary

One fateful night in a small English regional theatre during World War II a troupe of touring actors stage a production of Shakespeares King Lear. Bombs are falling, sirens are wailing, the curtain is up in an hour but the actor/manager Sir who is playing Lear is nowhere to be seen. His dresser Norman must scramble to keep the production alive but will Sir turn up in time and if he does will he be able to perform that night? The Dresser is a wickedly funny and deeply moving story of friendship and loyalty as Sir reflects on his lifelong accomplishments and seeks to reconcile his turbulent friendships with those in his employ before the final curtain.

As excellent as teathrical play than sometimes it forgets verosimilude. However, worth it to watch this two monsters, specially McKellen. Teather inside play is really good. Actresses and secondaries are also outstanding. In fact, is an actress which gives depth to the story, which loses some bright at the end.

It's always a risk adapting a great play

It's always a risk adapting a great play into a movie, film is a visual medium after all that can show a broader view to its audiance. And although the performances in this movie is superb, it lacks that cinematic experience, it feels like a stage play. McKellen and Hopkins are at their best though, with an equally impressive performance from Edward Fox as the lessor actor just happy to be part of the show. But the most cinematic and unexpected performance comes from Sarah Lancashire, it's very subtle and quite emotional. If you like movies that's adapted from stage plays, this one's for you.
