Plot summary

The wealthiest man in the world, John P. Merrick, is a private person who likes to stay anonymous. One of his many assets is Neeley's Department Store. There is labor unrest at the store, and the employees' anger is directed at him, who they hang in effigy outside the store despite not knowing what he looks like. Merrick, not happy at what he sees going on, decides to mete out the rabble-rousers. So he goes undercover as a sales clerk in the shoe department.

We don’t get movies like this anymore. The plot and story are great in theory and execution, managing to send a message about the working class and at the same time about unity and empathy between different groups (social classes in this case). Though the ending is predictable, there are constant mini plot-twists that make sure to never leave any part of the movie boring, in addition to the quips and funny remarks. The performances are definitely no less than brilliant, especially from Charles Coburn and Jean Arthur, and it would be hard to imagine The Devil and Miss Jones having been played by someone else. Of course, Sam Wood adds the cherry on top as director.

An enjoyable film, the cast does superb in their roles as a boss goes undercover to uncover problems in his store.

From union busting to middle-aged lusting. The wonderfully

From union busting to middle-aged lusting. The wonderfully irascible Charles Coburn forms an inappropriate relationship with an underling while semi-discreetly posing as an employee to ferret out likely Communist unionizers led by Bob Cummings. Cummings is going around wooing co-worker Jean Arthur. Arthur is the one who persuades Coburn to romance underling Spring Byington. Before portraying Santa Claus in Miracle on 34th Street, Edmund Gwenn was being a grinch on 38th Street. Mayhem ensues with wit and charm, brightening up by now a repetitive theme of softening a cold wealthy person's heart. The film is very funny, but also has truly tender moments that avoid maudlin, such as when Jean Arthur delivers a brief monologue on the emptiness of having no one to share love with and accepting the flaws of a partner whom one loves and whose company one enjoys. Bob Cummings' recitation of the Declaration of Independence and his praise of the US Constitution made me proud of being an American. The film concludes in a fast forward motion that contrasts with the subtlety of the rest of the story. However, it can't erase the substantial good will this film earns.
