Plot summary

A young Hans Christian Andersen goes in search of knowledge in the Garden of Paradise in order to make his studies easier. Each time he falls asleep, he experiences in his dreams the different characters he would later write about in fairy tales including The Little Mermaid, Thumbelina, and The Emperor's New Clothes.

The second half with Thumbelina and the Garden

The second half with Thumbelina and the Garden are the best parts. However, it does suffer from a tight budget and the animation is not up to par with Rudolph. Interesting take on Hans, worth seeing if cheap or rentable

So nostalgia rules my conscience on this one

So nostalgia rules my conscience on this one. I like it enough to say that forty or more years later (I likely viewed it during Family Film Festival rerun of it, not in its television premiere year of 1966). What I remember vividly is the Tree of Life in the portion about the Garden of Paradise. I retained the knowledge of The Daydreamer being based off Hans Christian Andersen stories, and just because Disney has been able to jazz up The Little Mermaid, doesn't relegate this one to the heap. Some kids may like the pace, and nothing says you have to watch straight through...there are four stories.

If you enjoy watching Rankin/Bass specials per certain festive traditions, it has been observed to check out their other non-seasonal pictures to broaden your respectful horizon for their ever-talented creative storytelling. This feature has a whimsical heart with charmingly entertaining animagic (stop motion) sequences in glamourized familiarity alongside fun and weighted music, expressive performances, and faithful interpretation towards its subject matter with a message. However, the characterization, mainly in the animagic realm, really put you into emotional attachment between the vocal performances and its part of the recognized favorably delicate caliber to find how irresolute the film left us without going full circle as another extension to its creativity – despite also flawed in staggered editing. Could not expand any further prevented satisfaction from quick check-ups near the end that could have been helpful rather than a degree of melancholy disposition, which is mainly felt in one aching number that capped its first sequence of such tearful spirit that lingers the under toned depression when the book eventually closes. Nonetheless, the ambition here is still entertaining without hope in masquerading a feel-good picture. (B)
