Plot summary

A test pilot is missing and a search party is sent out in the jungles of Mexico; however, while searching they uncover a monster in the jungle who became this way due to a dose of radioactivity.

King Kong did it better In the same

King Kong did it better In the same vein as the Colossal Man/best (57 and 59) this movie suffers from how bluescreen was used, and some of the shots just look very off. In some of the block-shots they have just used closeups to normal animals, and it does not make them look like giants, really. The Cyclops is reminiscent of the War of the Colossal Beast (58) prosthetic, but a bit bigger. King Kong (1933) had more ingenuity in its monstershots and cost a great deal more, and it shows.

In The Cyclops, a search party flies off

In The Cyclops, a search party flies off into the Mexican interior to look for an individual who disappeared there four years earlier. While the odds of success seem slim, things take a turn for the worse when they find that the uranium-rich landscape has caused the wildlife to grow to preposterous proportions, not to mention that the individual being sought is now a twenty-five-foot tall, dentally challenged, bald, one-eyed, mumbling madman. It's certainly one of the worst of the 1950s radioactive monster entries, filled with some really bad special effects, a dopier than normal story, and some laughably bad acting. Movies of this period and genre can be entertaining when they don't take themselves too seriously, but The Cyclops is just stupid and boring and annoying.

Bert I. Gordon has directed a lot of "big" movies: The amazing colossal man, War of the colossal beast, Attack of the puppet people, Earth vs. the spider...But out of all of them, The Cyclops is probably the cheesiest. The camera quality is very cheap and the green screen creature effects are typical of an low budget sci-fi flick of the time. But the acting is believable, and a big part of why this movie should be watch is because it stars icon Lon Chaney Jr. Very campy and cheesy.
