I think this film was a little... flat

I think this film was a little... flat. You have an A-list cast, a pivotal moment to bounce from in American history, and they kind of just... made it a film where they only talk to each other. Now granted, portions of the American Justice system like Habeus Corpus is not exactly known by your average American, but it really wasn't explained to an audience in case they didn't know. It's like they explained every facet of the film that mattered except their one out. It was brought up at the climax of the film as their "main coup de gras", but then not only did it do absolutely nothing, but then the guilty verdict came anyways for Surrat. I love sitting through a 2+ hour film, watching the protagonist fight tooth and nail for a cause they don't really believe in, just for the whole thing to have been for nothing. The film is fair with her representation, and she needed to be portrayed as guilty to preserve history, so I do believe it should have ended in such a manner.

While many concerns about this movie are about the talkative courtroom drama aspects of this film, I believe that these decisions were prudent from the film's makers. This story tells the very real experience of Mary Surrat, and goes to great lengths to make it feel authentic and grounded - even convincing me of her innocence. Her performance humanized the character for me, and made me understand her side of the story. She is a compelling character, and Robin Wright portrays her as a woman of integrity throughout. James McAvoy also steals the show as he helps the audience to empathize with both sides during this film. The legal elements such as Habeus Corpus are also made to be very digestible for audiences with no prior legal knowledge or experience. Overall I thought the execution was wonderful, and walked out of the experience with a new perspective. Would absolutely watch again!|
