Intriguing film with two great young actors. Quite a long runtime so it drags a little for periods, but worth being patient with. The film never quite slips into predictable tropes. Very well directed.

Abused, lonely children who grow up as misfits

Abused, lonely children who grow up as misfits turn into characters like Freddie Clegg, brilliantly portrayed by Terence Stamp, who then in turn, when they grow up and happen to have money and power, like to do nasty things. Samantha Eggar ended up as Clegg's kidnap victim, or should that be the prize specimen for his butterfly collection. This type of film portrays many a modern-day relationship..... the woman trapped by some psycho male who should have been locked up in Broadmoor years ago, a bullying, sadistic male who refuses to let the female go because he simply knows no other way of having a 'relationship. Terence Stamp, take a bow for taking on this most hideous of characters. `

Stamp and Eggar keep the movie grounded whenever

Stamp and Eggar keep the movie grounded whenever it threatens to jettison all believability. Also, I appreciate that they kept the cynical ending.
