The Brother from Another Planet (1984) is a 108-minute-long US sci-fi I saw on Plex in June 2026. I had never heard of this film. I did not enjoy it. The main character is enjoyable however the plot is vague and executed poorly. I felt this film was a tour of 1980s Harlem, it’s pros and cons, good and bad people. I enjoyed the 1980s pinnie culture (by the way – we hear Galaga noises yet the game being played is NOT Galaga, that’s a huge fail, and it happens twice). I enjoyed the variety of languages (I heard Russian, Korean, Spanish, English). I enjoyed the "diagnosis" scene. I enjoyed The Brother’s disorientation scene (he’s in a disused warehouse and he hears Russian). So, yes, there were parts to enjoy. The two lost white guys scene was useless. The Men In Black fight and chase scenes were weak. The heroin kingpin scene was weak. And many other examples. Rewatch? No. Recommend? No. 4/10.

Joe Morton is an alien in an unknown

Joe Morton is an alien in an unknown world….literally! He plays an extraterrestrial escaping from his home planet from slavery and ends up on Earth in NYC Everything is foreign to him and he’s mute He makes his way around but is rather skilled at fixing machinery as well as being an expert seducing women But two bounty hunters from his same planet track him down to take him back Morton really sells this character relying entirely on facial expressions and hand gestures thanks to John Sayles’ direction There’s a lot of personality he coveys without being verbal This shows that even an individual from somewhere far away can find peace and freedom re-looking at our own society It’s more low-tech sci-fi than anything yet has enough of its social commentary of racial prejudice to stand on its own It’s the immigrant experience of assimilation as it were
