Much better than you would think

In fairness I never saw the first one. I am not judging this based on the animation style, but just the content. If you want a generally wholesome story about kids who love each other having adventures, this is a good movie. Is it the most compelling story ever written? No, but it's quite good for children under 10. Good family values, pleasant and calming soundtrack. My kids, 6,4,2 love it. My oldest has read the book and thought it was a good adaptation. The children's adventures and general joy for and thirst for love and life is just plain heartwarming.Deserves much better than the ratings it gets.
