Plot summary

Peasant children Mytyl and Tyltyl are led on a magical quest for the fabulous Blue Bird of Happiness by the fairy Berylune. On their journey, they're accompanied by the anthropomorphized presences of a Dog, a Cat, Light, Fire, and Bread, among other entities.

1940 SHIRLEY TEMPLE! Always so adorable, and such a great little actress! This came out a year after The WIZARD of Oz, and it seems a bit in response. It's like a costumed fairy tale, a little girl on a quest through a magical land Giving it 4 stars, cuz little Shirley was always awesome. Never heardo til saw on the TV set late nite 12.5.23

This is an excellent movie that has been criminally under-rated over the years. I'm not sure why everyone dislikes this movie; but it's a very imaginative and entertaining vision quest movie: along the same lines as The Wizard of Oz. Shirley plays Mytyl, the bratty daughter of a local woodcutter in a small German town during the Napoleonic wars. Her father is called to duty; much to the chagrin of the family! And then bad luck serendipitously plagues the town in the forms of death, poverty, hunger. Mytyl is then visited by fairies in the night who task her with finding the mysterious and legendary Blue Bird of Happiness; who is kind of a messenger from God; and who can grant her and the town solace, peace and prosperity if captured. The bird can also save her father from the ravages of war.... Shirley goes on a quest to Fairyland to find this mythical bird; and she is aided and abetted by her brother; her household cat which has been transformed to human form; along with other household objects and things that have been transformed (a la Cinderella) into helpers on her journey. This story is awesome-- full of fun and amazing moments. I loved the evil cat; and the heavenly lair of unborn children; and all the other anthropomorphic beasts and creatures they meet along the way. And the ending is original and unexpected too. It's a great movie! Granted, it's not as good as the silent film original; but it's still quite good; a great companion piece to Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz. P S. The original silent movie was recently designated by the National Registry as being "culturally or historically significant". So you owe it to yourself to see this version or the awesome original! They're both long lost classics; hidden, forgotten gems from the past that deserve to be dug up, polished off and rediscovered!! Verdict: ? Highly Recommended!! ?

Mostly awful, Annoying characters, Lame comedy schtick, One of Shirley Temples big misfires. Only the use of Technicolor and the forest fire scene standout in this mess.
