Joika (2023) is a 111-minute-long NZ-Polish drama I saw on Prime in June 2026. This is a film about a real person, an American ballet dancer in Russia. It was filmed in Poland and post-production occurred in New Zealand. It contains English and subtitled Russian in equal parts, with some French (the language of ballet). This is the second ballet film I have seen in two days. An accident thanks to a DVD I was given and Prime’s algorithm. Both films show a level of workplace toxicity and bullying, of sexual harassment, and of pain, privation, injury and harm. I know a ballerina (well, I know her aunt and through her I have followed her career), and I hope this is not true for her. The structure of troubles/overcoming, troubles/overcoming became predictable. The scene in the patron’s bathroom was unexpected and interesting. Ryder’s dancing was impressive; I speak almost no Russian to comment, it felt ok. Rewatch? No. Recommend? No. 6/10.

Film molto molto interessante e ben raccontato, con

Film molto molto interessante e ben raccontato, con un ottimo equilibrio tra sequenze di danza e sequenze sullo sviluppo psicologico della protagonista; interpretata veramente meravigliosamente da Talia Ryder. Il racconto riesce a dare grande importanza alla danza, pur non rendendola unico fattore del film, anzi lasciando ampio margine ai dialoghi e al racconto della vita della ballerina. L'attenzione rimane alta fino alla fine, seppure forse leggermente meno avvolgente nel finale in cui alcuni passaggi di cambiamento della protagonista sono troppo veloci e non danno risalto alla loro stessa importanza. Ottimo film, originale e ben sviluppato.
