It's a slow, methodical film, and I think

It's a slow, methodical film, and I think if I had known up front that the premise and style were meant to mirror the paranoia and hypervigilance of an assassin trying to get out of the life, I might've appreciated it more. With that context it makes sense, but watching it cold, it mostly feels like you're waiting for something to finally happen. When things do kick in near the end, it's satisfying enough, and it pulls the rest of the movie into clearer focus. Overall it's fine. I probably won't remember much about it down the road, but it's a well-made film.

One expects more from George Clooney. His subdued

One expects more from George Clooney. His subdued performance could have been performed by just about anybody as it displays no emotion and no complexity of character. Clooney is an automaton working his way through the movie. But he is resourceful; needing a silencer for a rifle, he enters an Italian country garage in a barn and picks up all the necessary supplies to construct one. He goes on the run with only a backpack and hides out in a town where only beautiful women reside. But that backpack! It has all the things he needs for whatever comes his way, including a sport jacket, camera with a long telephone lens, and a Makita power drill. He manages to produce the silencer using an old pipe, some used washers, a mallet and an anvil. Amazing. As the implausibilities mount, the viewer is simply drawn to the beauty of the Italian village and countryside. If this movie had been set anywhere less pretty, and with fewer sexually promiscuous women, it would not be worth watching.
