A Struggle Ignored: The History Our Narratives Choose to Forget "Thangalaan stands as a stark reminder of the continuous struggle against oppressive systems—systems that have long sought to suppress the voices of the marginalized. The film, set against the backdrop of the Kolar Gold Fields, unearths a history that has been deliberately buried by those in power. It brings to light the resilience of the laborers whose suffering and resistance were erased from our historical consciousness, much like the struggles of the Dalits community which has been relegated to the margins for centuries. The story told in Thangalaan is not just about a fight for survival; it is about a fight for dignity. The laborers, akin to the Dalits and other oppressed communities in India, are forced to endure systemic exploitation, yet their spirit remains unbroken. This is the true heart of the film—a testament to the indomitable will of those who refuse to be silenced by the forces of oppression. The film’s visual beauty and haunting music serve as an apt canvas for the raw and unapologetic truth of these forgotten histories. The brilliance of Thangalaan lies not only in its narrative but in how it reclaims the voices of the oppressed, bringing them back into the fold of history, where they rightfully belong. The portrayal of these laborers, who fought for their freedom and dignity, mirrors the broader struggle of the Dalit community that I have always fought for. It is essential to remember that the history of India is not the history of the Brahminical elite, but the history of all its people, especially the oppressed. The film does not just narrate a tale of exploitation but challenges the historical narrative that has long served to marginalize certain communities. Just as the laborers in Thangalaan strive for their rights, so too must we continue to strive for justice, equality, and the recognition of our own rights—rights that were fought for and earned by those who came before us. Thangalaan serves as a reminder of the crucial need to challenge the historical narratives that have been dictated by the oppressor class. It is a powerful affirmation of the need for all marginalized voices to be heard and acknowledged in our collective history. The film is not merely a reflection of the past; it is a call to action for the present and future—a reminder that the fight for justice, equality, and dignity continues.
