Plot summary

Pirx, an experienced pilot, is hired to go on a top-secret mission to evaluate some 'nonlinears' (an experimental model of android) for use as crewmembers on future space flights. Pirx and this intriguing crew are sent out to launch two satellites into the rings of Saturn, but he is determined to find out and identify a hostile unhuman coworker among them.

Saw newly restored Test Pilot Pirx(Navigaator Pirx in

Saw newly restored Test Pilot Pirx(Navigaator Pirx in Estonian) with original Estonian dub from 1980. Story was very good and interesting. Movie was more do the drama side than sci-fi with lots of special effects and costumes. In some scenes actors should been more in focus and not so blurry. Besides that camera work was great. One and only James Bond movie like action sceen was good. Would have liked to see one more Pirx murdering attempt scene later in movie. Some studio filmed sci-fi scenes where more Television production level than cinema. For compensation other sci-fi sceens where great for cinema. If you wan't great story with space sci-fi like Star Trek then the movie is great. If you are looking stunningly realistic sci-fi FX and lots of action with fighting like Star Wars or Alien look elsewhere. I liked Space Ship military interior and electronics. Gived Realistic feel like it was happening in 1979. White sterile hospital interior look gives more futuristic feel like in Space odyssey 2001.

Good movie based on a story by Stanislaw

Good movie based on a story by Stanislaw Lem, but even better is the soundtrack. Music that fits the scenes very well and sound at times like proto versions of both US industrial music (Ministry and friends) and early UK jungle. Before his time, Arvo Pärt.

This is a very interesting film. Though dated

This is a very interesting film. Though dated (it's a scifi film from 1979 what would you expect) it does have all the elements that fans of the era will enjoy. The model space ships are fab and fun, the story is intelligent and engaging and the film has elements of a thriller/horror film on top of the standard scifi storyline. Like any good science fiction story/film, in my mind at least, this film has you leaving the theatre with plenty of questions. Whether it was poor filmmaking, something lost in translation or deliberate, the film doesn't give you all the answers you might be looking for. In fact, I think it's a combination of all three but with the later making up the most of it as even the main character Pirx ends the film asking questions and being unsure about the events that had taken place previously in the film. Worth checking out if you are a fan of classic science fiction films. If you are expecting great FX and space battles, look elsewhere. Test Pilot Pirx is intellectual and engaging first and foremost but gives enough corny scifi elements to satisfy.
