Terraforma feels like the sketch for the documentary the filmmakers would've made if they'd been able to secure funding. It's supposed to be a documentary about the successful creation of an artificial forest on an otherwise barren island formed from volcanic ash. Green Mountain is a fascinating story and somebody should definitely make a documentary about its history and HOW the forest came into being. But they just couldn't get the funding to make that. Not only are we told almost nothing about the creation of the forest, it's barely mentioned at all in the sparse commentary. (Clearly no money or time for research.) The filmmakers couldn't even afford to acquire any photos or video of the mountain before and during the creation of the forest, so we just have to take their word for it that any of this happened.Instead of a documentary about Green Mountain, we get an hour of what would normally be considered b-roll footage by a second unit crew--long static shots of trees and abandoned buildings accompanied by ambient music and natural sounds. The second half gives way to longer and longer segments of space stock footage from NASA - which is public domain. Very, very occasionally the voice of an invisible would-be talking head delivers a 1-2 minute scientific or philosophical meditation about ecosystems and outer space that rarely mentions or has anything to do with the artificial forest. They couldn't afford to film most of the interviewees, who don't talk about the island or Green Mountain anyway. The filmmakers clearly couldn't secure (or afford) permission to film in most of the habited areas of the area, so the viewer could be excused for interpreting all the abandoned moss-covered buildings as a sign of some cataclysmic disaster owing to human hubris. The viewer can also be excused for not understanding that this forest is in a single area on and around a mountain, not the entire island. They never really differentiate the mountain footage from the island. This makes the attempt to shoe-horn in talk about terraforming Mars feel disingenuous and a bit bunko.Still, the footage from the one day they spent on the mountain is very striking, and this footage would be a terrific backdrop for an actual story about people creating an artificial forest. The lack of any narrative or actual humans at the core of the film makes it hard for the audience to connect.
