Boring, depressing waste of potential. This documentary is essentially a series of interviews with famous artists, predominantly writers and musicians. Unfortunately, despite effort in cinematography and editing, the disparate interviews never really pull together into a coherent narrative. Nor do they even work as separate, thematically connected short stories or vignettes. Instead, they're just...interviews. You can find better interviews with each of the artists on podcasts, or in other productions, with more intriguing questions and revelatory answers. It's not like any of the artists are particularly reclusive. A documentary trying to figure out why artists make art could have a lot of potential! But the choice to exclusively interview a bunch of mostly American celebrities perhaps wasn't the best option. Wouldn't the answer to the question, "why make art?" be more interesting to hear from at least a few people working passionately without success--perhaps even from those whose art-making puts them in danger? Still, a series of celebrity artist interviews could still be enjoyable to watch. But the film is both too self-serious to have any fun with its setup, yet not serious enough to pose a challenge or provoke unexpected thought from its subjects. Ultimately, this is why the film fails. It cannot clear the bar of "passably decent," because it seems to take all the interview subjects' answers at face value. It never really challenges any claim and artist makes, nor does it prove deeper into the social, philosophical, or even practical implications of any answer. The result is a documentary full of already well-documented artists saying fairly unsurprising things about why they make art. I got so bored halfway through the movie, I didn't really know if I could finish the second half.
