life is all the same

Tauw (1970) is about the struggles of a young man seeking employment in post-colonial Africa. The short not only encapsulates Tauw's struggles, but also the struggles of how African people saw themselves in post-colonial Africa, from the family unit to life stages one has.My big problem with Tauw is that it feels like rewatching Borom sarret (The Wagoner, 1963), just with different characters. I do prefer Tauw, though, as a young person, I relate to it more. However, both films are quite great.It's odd to watch something from 1970 and know someone is experiencing this same situation; time is really just our imagination - we are still the same humans of the past.

Pedagogy with music

The film has a pedagogical undertone - and it was financed by an official Senegal institution of education. There is an overtly didactic passage on the necessity of finding work, filmed as a kind of dream. There are, however, also some sumptuous photography and various scenes of Tauw and two of his friends walking through the streets of Dakar with a perfect music score underneath the pictures. These are the moments when this obvious tale turns into cinema.
