Plot summary

Jack Chester, an overworked air traffic controller, takes his family on vacation to the beach. Things immediately start to go wrong for the Chesters, and steadily get worse. Jack ends up in a feud with a local yachtsman, and has to race him to regain his pride and family's respect.

A pretty standard cookie cutter 80's family vacation

A pretty standard cookie cutter 80's family vacation movie. It's been looked at as forgettable, but forgettable doesn't make something bad. It's from an era where it had to contend against other similar, better written family roadtrip movies. Candy and Rip Torn are great and it does succeed with giving us a good authentic feeling 80's family vacation to Florida. I was 8 when it came out and brings back many good memories of similar vacations to Florida during this exact era for me. It gives me a very special and nostalgic feeling especially, because I had a vacation to Florida during this very summer and remember seeing the posters during my vacation. When I want a good warm, nostalgic feeling for my childhood summers and vacations I put on Summer Rental and The Great Outdoors. I can see why it receives dreadful reviews from today's film critics because you really just had to be around when the film was fresh and new. If you aren't an 80's kid it just won't click with you.

John Candy is hilarious as an overworked air

John Candy is hilarious as an overworked air traffic controller going on a beach vacation! Director Carl Reiner’s beach family comedy Summer Rental (1985) is a laugh riot. I found Summer Rental calming and entertaining with its upbeat attitude and absurdist sense of humor. Candy dominates every scene as an exhausted father just trying to have a good time. Candy is very relatable as everything just goes wrong while on vacation. Rip Torn steals all of his scenes as the delightfully amiable pirate and seafood restaurateur Richard Scully. Karen Austin is hot and good humored as Jack’s devoted wife Sandy Chester. She’s such a good sport in Summer Rental. Kerri Green from The Goonies is an amazing surprise as the adorable teenage daughter Jennifer Chester, who just wants to date a musclebound lifeguard. She’s super sweet and supportive as Candy’s kid. I had such a crush on her as a kid when I saw her in The Goonies. It’s neat to see another role of hers.

Can't believe this didn't get higher ratings as

Can't believe this didn't get higher ratings as I find it funny as hell. Have seen it many times & keep laughing. Candy is terrific as are a few others in the cast.
