Plot summary

New York layabout Willie forms an unexpected bond with his young Hungarian cousin Eva when she pays him a surprise visit. Later, Eva moves in with their aunt in Cleveland, and Willie takes his best friend Eddie to see her—a visit that culminates in a strange, eventful trip to Florida.

This is now my second favorite Jarmusch film

This is now my second favorite Jarmusch film. Such an entertaining little movie. I don’t vibe with all of his films but his more hang out comedies are doing it for me. I can see myself rewatching this one more than most.

Stranger Than Paradise is beautiful in its simplicity

Stranger Than Paradise is beautiful in its simplicity. It has an excellent soundtrack, just like the Jim Jarmusch films that followed. Something that struck me about this picture, throughout the bonding phase between Willie and Eva, not a lot goes on. They smoked cigarettes and he ate TV dinners, yet I was never not entertained. The film being shot in both New York and Florida is really cool as both locations are home to me. I thoroughly enjoyed the long takes in the film. In particular, there was a nice take when they arrive at the motel in Florida, which was 3 minutes, 46 seconds. The characters are so true-to-life and the performances are so believable. I truly love this motion picture. A well-made, artistic independent film that really strikes my fancy. I like what Roger Ebert had to say about it. He said, "Stranger Than Paradise is a treasure from one end to the other. I saw it for the first time at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival, where it was having its first public showing. Half the people in the theater probably didn’t speak English, but that didn’t stop them from giving the movie a standing ovation, and it eventually won the Camera d’Or prize for the best first film. It is like no other film you’ve seen, and yet you feel right at home in it. It seems to be going nowhere, and knows every step it wants to make. It is a constant, almost kaleidoscopic experience of discovery, and we try to figure out what the film is up to and it just keeps moving steadfastly ahead, fade in, fade out, fade in, fade out, making a mountain out of a molehill." A Jim Jarmusch masterpiece, which is a must-watch for any true cinefile. 97/100
