I was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1976, ten

I was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1976, ten years before this movie was made. I think the acting in this film was very believable, but I think that the doctor's statements and his attitude was so poor as to be unrealistic even for the time. While the doctor in the film gives little to no hope to the parents, my family was told by my psychiatrist that I could realistically be living a normal life after six months of treatment with medication. It actually took over a year because of my not being completely compliant with the medication regimen. Treatment rather than cure is still the goal. There are better testimonies on the subject currently. But this film has heart - the family is portrayed with all their love and fears as they struggle with this personal tragedy.

It’s quite good. One of the better portrayals

It’s quite good. One of the better portrayals of mental illness that I’ve seen. And it was made for TV in 1987! It covers many different aspects, including family dynamics. The topic is approached with great empathy. This is worth a watch. It’s just as relevant today as it was then.

80's film on mental illness

This film isn't bad, although many people commenting have hated it all because of the music. What 80's film didn't? Others commenting that they have no experience with the illness yet think they're able to talk about it. First of all psychiatric drugs like Quetiapine for example issued to myself in 2008 was so horrible that I could barely move. They had to reduce the mg. There is so much stigma attached to mental illness especially the ones like this. Sadly the way people think about it causes them to give films like this negative feedback. The film is sad and scary too that this illness can come to a person suddenly. A girl with so much ahead of her became very sick.
