Plot summary

In 1520, the notorious and power-hungry Danish King Christian II is determined to seize the Swedish crown from Sten Sture, no matter what it takes. Meanwhile, sisters Freja and Anne make a solemn promise to seek revenge on the men who brutally murdered their family. Everything comes to a head in the heart of Stockholm, where the sisters are drawn into a ruthless political struggle between Sweden and Denmark that culminates in a mass execution, presided over by the mad King "Christian the Tyrant," known as the Stockholm Bloodbath.

Some of the acting was fine, but what

Some of the acting was fine, but what killed it for me was the way the baddies were chewing on the scenery. It could be graphic at times and I know that history is graphic I feel like the point could have been proven without some of the gore and the sexual assault scene.

This is probably the best Swedish film ever

This is probably the best Swedish film ever made. I would give it five stars if it wasn't perhaps a tiny bit too long: Less talking, more action please! In any case, every person who had to read about the Stockholm bloodbath in school needs to see it. We knew it was bloody, yes, but had no idea how much fun it was. ?

Stockholm Bloodbath (2025) is a 118-minute-long Swedish film I saw on Prime in 2026. If you have ever wanted to see a Swedish historical event on film filtered through an aesthetic I would politely describe as Ritchiesque (a la Guy Ritchie) in modern English with mostly Swedish actors – then, hoboy! is this film for you. I am not spending much time on this review. The production and acting are all adequate. The style is so gauche and detestable. Multiple screens like it’s a cartoon or Zoom call. On-screen banners for character names. Modern English swearing. And, being a petty, pernickety type, I object to the number of candles. It’s 1520, people, we don’t have 75 candles to spare on people we intend to kill. Rewatch? No. Recommend? Only if you like the aforementioned specifications. 4/10.
