Decent concept poorly executed. Really slow and sometimes a little confusing (especially early on), but I had a difficult time really being engaged with the story or characters. Acting was okay I suppose but nobody really stood out (nice, however, seeing Raul Julia in his first feature film). This is one to be skipped. **2.25/5**

Lacks the strength of a strong story and engaging characters.

After watching this for a while, I had a difficult time believing this as an adaption of a Harold Robbins novel. For one thing, it's not even memorable as fun, lavish trash. Certainly there are some extravagant crowd scenes and great use of Puerto Rico locations (some of them actually taking place in Sicily), but it's much to do about nothing about a mafia hit man who wants to leave the mob so they decide to put out a hit on him. Alex Cord is very bland in the leading role, and his leading ladies, Britt Eklund and Barbara McNair, play characters who aren't very well formulated. There are some surprising appearances along the way of some future stars and popular character players including Roy Scheider, Antonio Fargas, Charles Durning, Raul Julia and Olympia Dukakis.

Patrick O'Neal, John Dehner and Joseph Wiseman have major supporting roles, and Lincoln Kilpatrick is seen as a mobster who makes an unwanted play for McNair. I kept wondering when the plot was actually going to take off, but the plot is basically narrowed down to a bunch of plotting before it really does begin to come together. As a mafia movie, it's actually one of the dullest and poorly directed by Bernard Kowalski. A movie like this is supposed to excite you long before it gets to the conclusion, and it's like waiting for the sun to come out at the beach and never does. Really one of the gloomiest films I've ever seen.
