To those of you who know nothing about Spitfires (and those who didn't do research but just mouthed off) there were many refitted Spitfires that flew reconnaissance missions over Berlin. The photo reconnaissance planes had no guns and the missions were flown without an escort. Instead of weapons, the Spitfire Mark XI was refitted with leading edge gas tanks for a longer range, which allowed the pilots to take the plane as far as Berlin to take photographs of the enemy targets and then return home! They had cameras mounted on the back. The planes were painted sky blue to help them “blend in”. A great many WW2 pilots of the time were unaware that this could be accomplished by giving a complete refit to the Spitfire MK9 (thus it became the Spitfire XI). I read a story about an American pilot, Lt. Col. John S. Blyth, of the 14th Squadron 7th PRG (stationed at Mount Farm, Oxfordshire, UK 1944) who flew 36 reconnaissance missions over Berlin in one of the refitted Spitfires; USAAF Spitfire MK XI, PA944.
Check the credits - made on a budget by just a coupe of guys and their wives/ friends who acted, did the CGI, make-up, sound, video, post-production etc all by themselves. Says it all.
This could be interesting. Have known about these aircraft and the brave pilots who flew them, with no armament yet, gathered much photographic information from a very high altitude, What they went through to get these photographs , was unbelievable. High altitude in cold condititions with no meand of defence, called for very brave piolts. I never heard much about them except what I've just said. This worth a view. Anyone who protected democracy during WWII deserves to be heard.
