I’ve always loved the Spirit Halloween store. Walking into one is like walking into a seasonal museum of nostalgia—you’re surrounded by costumes, props, and animatronics that remind you of your favorite villains and characters from childhood all the way into adulthood. There’s a certain magic to the place, a playful energy that taps into your love for Halloween no matter your age. Naturally, when a movie was announced based on the store, I thought it had the potential to be a fun, spooky, family-friendly ride. Unfortunately, the execution left much to be desired. The film takes the clever premise of being trapped in a haunted Spirit Halloween store and turns it into an over-the-top supernatural mess. Instead of focusing on a handful of memorable creatures or building suspense around the store itself, the movie floods the screen with too many monsters at once. There’s no balance, no restraint, and as a result, the story feels cluttered and overwhelming. The concept could have worked if it had been streamlined—maybe centering on one or two signature villains that gradually become more threatening—but the screenplay decided to throw everything at the wall, and sadly, nothing sticks. Now, I won’t knock the director here. For what they were working with, I felt they did a decent job. Some of the set pieces and transitions captured the right tone, and the idea of kids exploring this haunted environment could have been charming under the right circumstances. The downfall, without question, lies in the writing. The script desperately needed to be tightened up and refined, because without a strong backbone, no amount of creative direction or production design could save it. The kid acting was also hit-or-miss. I understand that in family films, especially those geared toward younger audiences, child performances often lean toward exaggeration. But there’s a difference between lighthearted fun and outright overacting. Too often, the delivery felt forced, exaggerated to the point where it became more annoying than amusing. I wish more filmmakers would trust kids—and audiences in general—to appreciate genuine, grounded performances rather than assuming over-the-top antics equal comedy. It doesn’t, and it makes films like this unappealing to the adults who might otherwise want to enjoy them alongside their children. What makes this film especially frustrating is that the potential was all there. The Spirit Halloween brand practically markets itself—it’s iconic, recognizable, and full of material that could have been mined for clever scares, nostalgic nods, or even satirical humor about Halloween consumerism. Imagine if the store itself had become a character, with the animatronics acting as eerie extensions of its personality. Instead, we got a watered-down, predictable children’s adventure that squandered every opportunity to embrace what makes Spirit Halloween such a cultural staple. The result isn’t just a disappointing movie—it feels like a betrayal of a concept that could have been truly special. In the end, Spirit Halloween: The Movie isn’t unwatchable, but it’s far from great. If you’re looking for something seasonal and harmless to put on in the background, it’ll fill the time. But if you’re hoping for a film that captures the actual magic of walking into a Spirit Halloween store and feeling that nostalgic thrill, this isn’t it. It’s a missed opportunity, and that’s what makes it most disappointing.

You'd think they'd get a little creative with all the things you can find in a spirit halloween. But nope, very lackluster.
