Alright, I watched this on HBO Max, (which

Alright, I watched this on HBO Max, (which may be the culprit behind my beef with this movie). It is claimed that this film is in "English". Yet over 60% of the dialogue, is in Korean! There are no English subtitles. Especially when we see these deep conversations, between Hayoung and her dad, between Hayoung and her mom, etc. Clearly, there was struggle and trauma happening within this family, yet I was "left in the dark", not able to understand the conversations. As an American viewer, I sat through the whole thing. Very frustrating, I wanted to know what was going on! Would liked to have given this movie a better rating. Really, the only thing I could comprehend was body language, faces, and the English dialogue between Hayoung and the other English-speaking, rich kids at the school. Therefore, from what I have seen, this movie is only geared for Korean-Americans, who are fluent in both languages. Everyone else, you will be very frustrated trying to watch this movie.

I loved this movie. It is a quiet

I loved this movie. It is a quiet, introspective look at a high school girl's troubles with family and school, and life. It's coming-of-age done right. The movie is subtle, not the typical over-the-top, over-produced Hollywood fare. So refreshing. The main character, Hayoung, is very likable and relatable. I would like to see more movies like this. It's a rarity.

An Important film of our time

I watched Smoking Tigers expecting nothing. But liked it because it tells a lot about the human life of modern times.Smoking Tigers is absolutely a drama film, a film that talks about a family, talks about the relations among family members. The style of the film is a bit gloomy. However, audiences will not feel sad by watching Smoking Tigers. They will feel connected, mostly those who are living abroad or in a foreign land for better future or just for their survival. The diasporic people of different communities face difficulties in many ways. The adverse effects easily keep impacts on the youngstars. I really appreciate the makers for making this film. The 21st century needs more films like Smoking Tigers.
