Plot summary

Rick Belrow Livingston, in love with Broadway star Lisa, is sentenced to 30 days in jail for speeding through a small town. He persuades the judge's daughter Cindy to let him leave for one night, so that he can visit Lisa on her birthday. After that he goes on the town with Cindy and she falls in love with him. But Dr. Schemmer wants his son to become her husband.

MGM had played their hand too fast and

MGM had played their hand too fast and too often, with all their musicals looking alike. Now, the only difference is that there is a slight plot, and they threw in disparate entertainers. While all the entertainers were good -- Bobby Van, Nat King Cole -- there was no cohesion attempted. Gratingly, the women, in particular, were wearing the same snazzy outfits they wore in other MGM musicals, with a touch up here and there. The men couldn't get out of their tuxes and formal suits, which apparently was everyday wear in New York, even when mowing the grass. I'm sure every man in America dressed this way during this time period. This film is better than the silly and vastly overrated Singin' in the Rain, but does not compare to any of the Judy Garland musicals, which all had memorable songs in them. A good musical needs good songs with melodies that the audience will remember as they leave the theatre -- that is an important test of whether the movie was a success or not.

MGM's uninspired musical remake of its 1936 hit

MGM's uninspired musical remake of its 1936 hit contains three memorable song sequences: Nat King Cole introduces the Oscar-nominated ballad "My Flaming Heart," Bobby Van hips and hops to a Busby Berkeley-choreographed dance number, and - best of all - Ann Miller has her most memorable on-screen routine in the Berkeley-directed "Gotta Hear That Beat."

★★1/2 (out of four) An energetic musical that offers a few well staged dance numbers, but is unable to deliver the goods when it comes to plot and character development. Jane Powell is pretty cute in the lead, however. Farley Granger plays a man picked up for speeding in a small town. Making an example of him, the judge sentences him to 30 days in the local jail. The judges daughter (Powell) is intrigued by him and tries to rehabilitate him. THe musical numbers overshadow everything else.
