Plot summary

I can tell you about my father's voyage on his boat, because I was with him all the time. It was a rather strange voyage, with no ocean or sea crossing, not even a lock to pass through... The boat stayed at home and so did my father. But that does not mean there was no adventure...

Beautiful drawings

The drawings are really beautiful, but they never took life for me, at the exception of the rare sailing moments.I thing the narration and dialogues voices were too « récité » for my taste. Perhaps they sound better in other languages.I was really looking forward this movie and I am sad not to have enjoyed that much.

When the promise of the open sea is measured in the length of a garden.

Heroic explorers, long-distance adventurers and lone sailors like Joshua Slocum - the first man to circumnavigate the globe solo under sail in 1895 - belong to a bygone era, the stuff of post-war childhood fantasies, and thus of Jean-François Laguionie, the grand elder of French animation. Yet Slocum is merely the spark for a nostalgic, deeply autobiographical dive: that particular summer when Laguionie's stepfather decided he would build a two-masted ketch in his garden, in preparation for a great voyage - one he would never actually take.More than the slightly mad undertaking itself, what the filmmaker recalls are the orbits surrounding that boat: the curious gaze he cast upon the adult world, the parental duo, and the fragile team he formed with his mother - all while wondering how, exactly, he might form another with this gruff, affection-clumsy stepfather. Not much happens, on the surface, in this vignette of 1950s France - a content and optimistic society whose horizon remains resolutely narrow, which is precisely why the very idea of building a boat feels like a promise of adventure. But that is where the charm of Laguionie's cinema lives: in apparent stillness, in soft colours and clean lines, and in the tiny nothings from which lifelong memories are built.
