The only thing that sets Sleeping with the

The only thing that sets Sleeping with the Enemy apart from a clichéd Lifetime original movie is the fact that Julia Roberts is in it. I couldn’t get over the fact that every performance in this 90s thriller is either lifeless or overly melodramatic. Patrick Bergin has the crazy eyes down pat, but the way he delivers lines was just so wooden. Even though there are moments of suspense, most of the film is just filler, and the very convenient ways the plot advanced made me chuckle. I didn’t hate Sleeping with the Enemy, I’m just having a difficult time understanding why it did so well at the box office.

A solid early ’90s thriller that still holds

A solid early ’90s thriller that still holds up better than expected. Sleeping with the Enemy isn’t groundbreaking, but it delivers exactly what it sets out to do—tense, straightforward suspense with a strong central performance. Julia Roberts, still early in her career, carries the film well, showing a more serious, dramatic side beyond the romantic roles she became known for. Patrick Bergin is the real standout here, playing the obsessive, controlling husband with just the right level of calm menace. The story itself—woman fakes her death to escape an abusive relationship was one of the earlier mainstream versions that set the tone for a lot of copycats that followed. One thing that stands out is the setting—supposedly Cape Cod, but it clearly feels more like the Hamptons coastline, which is a bit distracting if you know New England. It may not be original by today’s standards, but it helped define a whole wave of similar films that came after it.
