Nick Cassavettes directs Sean Penn, Robin Wright, Debi Mazar, the late Harry Dean Stanton, the late James Gamdolfini, and John Travolta Two respective men bid for the affection of Maureen Murphy Quinn in two parts of her life Eddie Quinn used to be married to Maureen until a mistake landed him in a psychiatric hospital He gets out but discovers she's moved on with three children and a new husband, Joey Joey makes it quite clear Eddie should just walk away and leave Maureen alone but Eddie isn't one to back down It becomes a tricky love triangle with clashing of what the other really wants or who's filling the empty void Stanton co-stars as a friend of Penn's character, and Gandolfini plays the abusive neighbor Oh my god this opening took a brutal 48 min just to get started Plots should not take that long to set things up Once Travolta and the kids show up the film does get a bit more juicy in the drama department Both of them showcase their talent for raw emotions And it's a real meditation on love and madness, sometimes they're one in the same A flawed, uneven but really well-acted exercise
