Plot summary

Shakes plods about his duties as party clown, and uses all of his free time getting seriously drunk. Binky, another clown, wins the spot on a local kiddie show, which depresses Shakes even more, and his boss threatens him with unemployment if he can't get his act under control.

Bobcat Goldthwait's Shakes the Clown is a totally unhinged dark comedy, but it's not quite as wild and fun as I was expecting. Legend told of a much more entertaining movie, often dubbed the "Citizen Kane of alcoholic clown movies," yet the actual experience feels more depressingly bleak than hilariously chaotic. While it deserves points for its uncompromisingly gritty, avant-garde vision of a depraved clown subculture, the sluggish pacing and mean-spirited tone keep it from being the cult classic joyride it promises to be.
