Plot summary

A breed of humans with dangerously powerful telepathic abilities -- the scanners -- are being recruited by a corrupt police commander, John Forrester, in his crusade to take over the city.

Media Home Entertainment knew what was up. We

Media Home Entertainment knew what was up. We wanted more Scanners and we didn't care where we got it. Christian Duguay, who would direct the third film in this series and Screamers, took over for David Cronenberg and suddenly, we had a whole new story to watch. David Hewlett plays David Kellum, a veterinary student that gains the power to hear thoughts. Soon, this becomes overwhelming. Yet when he stops a robbery by exploding the head of a criminal, police chief John Forrester offers him a job tracking down criminals, like a man who is putting strychnine in milk containers, making this movie in the poisoned milk genre along with The Cat O'Nine Tails, The Two Mrs. Carrolls, Impulse, The Woods, Confessions, Edge of Darkness and Revenge of the Living Dead Girls. Of course, Forrester just wants to take over the city and is using another Scanner named Drak to murder the mayor and to kill our hero's parents. Well, adoptive parents, as his real mom and dad are Cameron Vale and Kim Obrist from the first movie. He has a sister who leads him to a secret place filled with captive Scanners and a final battle with Drak. This movie is so Canadian that Aldo Nova plays over the final credits.

It’s a flawed but not completely broken film

It’s a flawed but not completely broken film. There are some good bits and some bad bits. A few elements are better than the previous like the technical qualities, music, cinematography and arguably the direction but other areas are noticeably worse like the characters, acting and writing. Raoul Trujillo is one of the worst over actors I’ve ever seen. The first hour is pretty boring with all the good bits of the first film gone, this is generic. Some parts of the story don’t make sense. The final thirty minutes is entertaining but the rest is pretty forgettable. Overall it’s fine, the small additions to the lore don’t make it worth watching.

Pas vraiment divertissant, on suit ce film à moitié à cause du manque de crédibilité des acteurs dans leur rôle et du fait que les actions s'enchaînent sans surprise (aucun twist) et sans tension (on s'en fout du sort des personnages). Le film propose quelques scènes avec des effets spéciaux sympas mais rien de bien fameux à se mettre sous la dent.
