Plot summary

Savannah is the true story of Ward Allen, a romantic and bombastic character who rejects his plantation heritage for the freedom of life on a river. Ward navigates the change of early 20th century America on the wrong side of the law and society, his long-time friend, a freed slave named Christmas Moultrie, at his side. Master of Shakespeare, and the shotgun that provides Savannah's markets with fowl, Ward fights for his rights as a hunter. His charisma and eloquent rhetoric win the heart of a society woman who defies her father to marry him. An elderly Moultrie tells the story of life on the river with his friend to a little boy, who passes the legendary Ward Allen down to the next generation.

Its the true story of Ward Allen (Jim

Its the true story of Ward Allen (Jim Caviezel) who back in early 20th century apparently turned his back on landed wealth in the form of refusing to inherit a Deep South plantation and also of making any practical use of his expensive Oxford education. Instead he chose to matey up with a freed slave(Chiwetel Ejiofor) and spent his life on the river illegally shooting ducks for a living. The film is based on his biography, he was obviously a larger-than-life character that was deeply remembered in the area and with his education he wrote erudite articles in the local papers extolling the virtues of a free life with nature rather than a boring one as a lawyer. The actors perform their roles with good heart but it jumps too suddenly from one part of his life to another. One minute he is deep in the reeds of the Mississippi and the next he is married to a beautiful feisty wife (Jaimie Alexander) who fails to tame his wandering ways. One minute he is best mates with his friend and within a minute or two of a scene they break apart. We encounter pathos with a still-born child and the disintegration of his wife over a few scenes. The trouble is it just lacks any depth, and aside from the lovely views of the river in the gloaming, it is not particularly memorable.

Usually, it takes just one performer to persuade

Usually, it takes just one performer to persuade me to watch a new movie. But here I get three great ones with James Caviezel, Jaimie Alexander, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. But with a title like Savannah, something that looks like a Southern period piece, I was a bit wary but, in the end, I was more than happy watching this movie. Based on a true story, this movie tells the story of Ward Allen and his life living as a duck hunter in his town of Savannah. But it is not just Allen but his loyal hunting partner Christmas Moultrie and that of his beautiful young wife Lucy Stubbs. From his time hunting to his courting and his raucous marriage with his wife, to the tragic circumstances leading to his death. This story is also told not just via the life of Allen but also from the years of a man named Jack Cay who was distantly associated with Allen. I must say its always a pleasure seeing Jim Caviezel as an actor, truly underrated, and shows an incredible ability to become such an amazing character in whatever movie he appears. It was interesting seeing his depiction of Ward Allen as a learned man who settled on hunting because it was simple and true to his nature and it was always unfair that he was punished for it. I adored Jaimie Alexander as Lucy, the best thing I love about Caviezel is that he can play a lover to a woman with passion without having to act out a sex scene. Alexander is a wonderful actress given the right material and this one was wonderful especially near the end where she displays the painful depression over a tragic event. Chiwetel Ejiofor does a great job of showing the complex but marvelous friendship between Allen and Moultrie. All in all, a great movie.
