Haunting Visuals in a Familiar Story

Segoro Pitu Black Magic (Santet Segoro Pitu) is a solid addition to the trending line-up of Javanese occult-based horror films. Set in Semarang in 1983, this film highlights market competition that leads to high-level black magic terror.I give this film a rating of 7/10. It is a "Good" horror film, excelling in technical execution and atmosphere, although the narrative plays it too safe.Why a 7/10 rating?Strong Atmosphere and World-Building: The main point for this rating is director Tommy Dewo's success in building a dirty, damp, and mystical world. The feel of Semarang in the 80s and the hustle and bustle of its traditional markets feel very authentic and haunting.Effective Physical Terror (Body Horror): This film does not rely solely on ghosts that appear suddenly. Its strength lies in the visualisation of the disgusting and painful effects of black magic (vomiting blood, foreign objects in the body). The practical effects make the audience feel the pain too.Convincing Acting: Christian Sugiono gives a surprising performance. He successfully portrays a father who slowly breaks down physically and mentally, giving the story real emotional weight.The film is held back to a 7 due to its highly formulaic plot. The story structure-a harmonious family is disrupted, they investigate the source of the black magic, then the climax involves confronting the shaman-feels repetitive if you've seen similar Indonesian horror films before. The lack of surprises in the narrative makes it a visually appealing watch, but average in terms of storytelling.

Better than most religious indonesian horror

This movie is based on the old (or the original) Javanese culture pre-Islam. The depictions of various ghosts and curses are quite accurate despite some adjustments to cater for the bigger audience (not just Javanese).The movie plot is centered around the hustle and bustle of life in a traditional wet market in Semarang, Central Java. Most javanese merchants believe that a certain kind of magic can be used as a tool to attract customers, but it always come with a price. This movie quite accurately depicts how the rituals are done according to the old ways.Don't trust the negative reviews, as a native Javanese, this movie is the closest you get to understand the old Javanese supernatural world.
