A private place from which most people are excluded… Much was made during the publicity and promotion for Sanctum of James Cameron’s name being attached…

I was a little surprised to see how low Sanctum was scored on IMDb. I mean the film is not a masterpiece and I'm sure James Cameron's involvement was actually minimal and used as advertising mostly. The film is perhaps a little predictable at times and the 'based on a true story' part of things is used extremely loosely. The 3D is typical of today's latest unfortunate fad and does not make the film more entertaining but the story and characters are solid! I really liked the characters and thought they did a great job developing them throughout the story. The action is solid and the buildup to the disaster and the escape is perfect. The film could be faulted for a few things but for sheer entertainment purposes this is where its at!! Sometimes a film should be just entertaining and Sanctum fills that void perfectly. The father and son dynamic works well for the emotional part of the film and the dangerous survival aspect fills the action parts well. The film has a great pace and a solid setting making for some breath taking and dangerous cinematography. Richard Roxburgh has a lot of supporting roles under his belt, he is quite the character actor. His performance in this film is great for the surly and seasoned explorer. He's macho and forceful on screen and a solid lead. I think Rhys Wakefield is certain to be a hot up and comer and despite what some say about this film I think his performance as Roxburgh's son is terrific. Their chemistry together is terrific and the father vs son dynamic makes the film work ultimately. When their survival is at hand it only gets better. Ioan Gruffudd is good in his role as young explorer Carl. He doesn't particularly steal any scenes but he is still good in his role. Alice Parkinson does about the same job as his girlfriend Victoria although I felt like she gave her character a little more depth than Gruffudd did his. The supporting cast are all decent in their respective roles. They aren't given a lot of depth or shining moments given they really are just set up to be casualties of the cave or The Sanctum if you will. To call this James Cameron's is ludicrous and maybe people are disappointed because of this point although I still stand by the fact that James Cameron is not the legend some make him out to be despite some great films. But Cameron is one of nearly a dozen producers and that makes him less of a producer and more of a consultant if even that. So I can't say anything about his directing or producing in this. The man at the helm in this case is relative newcomer Alister Grierson who prior to this has done mostly short films. He wants to tell a great story and I think in a lot of ways he does. I don't fully understand reviewers that said there was no development to the characters because the father and son trying to escape death and their tough relationship is well done. They spend a good chunk of the beginning of the film establishing the characters even the smaller ones so we feel something as they try to cheat death. I think Sanctum is actually a terrific adventure flick and it will entertain you and is absolutely worth seeing. Don't bother or worry about the 3D because its just as good in 2D I am sure of it. Don't listen to the haters, this one is perfectly enjoyable. 8/10
