Christmas As Usual is tone-deaf, stereotypical, and casually

Christmas As Usual is tone-deaf, stereotypical, and casually racist. As a Bangali person who was in a long-term intercultural relationship and never treated as "other," I found this film genuinely offensive. The Norwegian families repeatedly calling the male character "Shazam" instead of his actual name, Jashan, isn’t humour — it’s disrespect. Names matter, and the constant othering is uncomfortable to watch. The film also leans into lazy cultural ignorance. While the Indian male character is written as rude and unaccepting (and yes, he should also have respected Norwegian traditions), the film offers no balance or growth. Instead, it amplifies negative stereotypes, makes him look increasingly worse, and frames the female character as ashamed. Respect should work both ways — this story failed to show that. I gave this one star only because I can’t give zero. A wasted opportunity and a surprising misstep for Netflix.
