I’m a massive fan of Rory McIlroy, so

I’m a massive fan of Rory McIlroy, so I was very excited for Rory McIlroy: The Masters Wait focused on what felt like the defining victory of his career, and I was over the moon with how good a job they did. I really liked their decision to follow his entire final round on The Masters Tournament Sunday, cutting away at key highs and lows to provide backstory that added great context and emotion. I really, really enjoyed it and would highly recommend it to any fans of sport documentaries.

Masters Bait Without The Hook

The documentary sticks to a very standard, run of the mill format and ultimately offers little in the way of new insight. The only somewhat revealing element is a glimpse into how Rory McIlroy can still struggle with the mental side of the game, but even that isn't explored deeply enough to feel meaningful.Beyond that, it falls into a series of clichés. Hearing that he "wanted to win all the majors" as a child or that he spent all day at his home course isn't unique. Those are common stories for countless junior golfers. There's nothing here that truly separates his journey or adds depth to what fans already know. We here how he's special but never are told specific reasons why.For a documentary like this, you expect a deeper dive, something more personal, more revealing, or at least a fresh perspective. Instead, it plays things far too safe and ends up feeling underwhelming.Overall, this is well below average. You'd honestly get more out of your time just rewatching the 2025 final round on fast forward.
