Plot summary

Retired bachelor Mr Hoppy is hopelessly in love with his neighbour Mrs Silver, but she is only interested in her pet tortoise Alfie - until Mr Hoppy hatches an audacious plan.

Whilst this is not entirely faithful to the book, I am not a purist when it comes to film adaptations. This is an incontrovertibly beautiful film that brings together two perfectly cast, seasoned professionals - Dame Dench and Dustin Hoffman - as a convincingly ditsy and girlish widow and an endearingly sweet outsider. It is the perfect length with added elements that complement the original style, including the infuriating Mr. Pringle (Richard Cordery) and a slightly different approach to the ending (which I won't give away here). One more thing - the set is simple and wonderful.
