Plot summary

Highlighting one of the most innovative American directors, this film reveals the path traveled by the auteur from his small-town Texas roots to his warm reception on the awards circuit. Long before he directed Boyhood, Richard Linklater’s intense desire to create fueled his work outside the Hollywood system. Rather than leave Texas, he chose to collaborate with like-minded artists crafting modest, low-budget films in a DIY style. His ability to showcase realistic characters and tell honest stories was evident from his films, and others soon took notice of his raw talent.

Richard Linklater: Dream is Destiny' begins with a

'Richard Linklater: Dream is Destiny' begins with a linear approach to the subject's movies, but because the subject is so unique, it switches gears midstream. If Linklater is a taste you haven't acquired then this isn't for you, but if you life the Before series, Boyhood, Dazed and Confused, Everybody Wants Some and other films by Linklater this is required viewing. Linklater is cerebral and interviewed by a director of the documentary, Lewis Black (no, not that Lewis Black). Between the behind the scenes footage, from before he directed his firs film, Slacker, and the talks with his parents and other key actors in his movies we find out a lot about the process of Linklater. The ultimate Hollywood outsider is chronicled in a cheerful way. The only negative for me is I would have liked to see Linklater talk about the challenges a bit more. He's done independent films on shoestring budgets and we all know those films are the most difficult to get distribution. Overall a worthwhile watch. Final Score: 7.7/10

Dream is Destiny is an enjoyable tribute to Austin's greatest directing talent and was extremely well-received during its showing at Austin's SXSW Film Festival where Linklater is adored. It is mostly focused on showing and discussing clips from Linklater's oeuvre. The clips are enjoyable and well-chosen. The film offers some insight into Linklater's development. The interviews with him and his friends are entertaining. And yet, a film done his close friends is more of a tribute than a serious critical examination of his work. The film was co-directed by his close friend Louis Black (co-founder of SXSW and the Austin Chronicle). Almost by definition it lacks the critical depth needed for serious documentary filmmaking. It is informative and entertaining, but more nostalgic than really in-depth. It skips over his weaker films and focuses on his more iconic works. It also chronicles some of the changes in Austin, TX and the Austin film scene that has grown up around him. It is certainly a good introduction to his work for those who aren't familiar and provides a nice walk down memory lane for fans. Still, a much better documentary could be made about Linklater and his works.
