This "Quatermass 2" comes from the good old times when the word 'sequel' didn't necessarily mean: "uninspired and inferior product that cashes in on the profits of the original"! No, this is a strong, intelligent film, very ingenious and extremely compelling from start to finish! "The Quatermass Xperiment" was a terrific film – and a true Sci-Fi landmark - but I almost feel inclined to say that this sequel is even better! The story can be described as a British (and typically Hammer) version of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", only more bizarre and fantasy-like. The headstrong and well-spoken scientist Professor Quatermass sees his ambitious new space-project canceled by the authorities and, while investigating the possible reasons for this, he discovers a much bigger and dangerous political conspiracy. Apparently, the government stole his basic ideas of creating an alternative atmosphere that slowly adjusts itself to oxygen, but the extra-terrestrial matter has a will of its own and it takes possession of everybody who comes into contact with it. The impact begun in the English countryside but it'll soon take over the entire world...

The script (written by the father of Brit Sci-Fi; Nigel Kneale) is still very scary and disturbing despite of the far-fetched material and it particularly succeeds in bringing an uncanny feeling of hysteria and hopelessness. It's also very admirable to see how director Val Guest successfully blends the political thriller aspects (usually, very boring stuff) with eerie horror. The powerful cast definitely helps in making this fantastic story more believable and even the locations and scenery feel frighteningly real. I really love Brian Donlevy in the role of prof. Bernard Quatermass, although I repeatedly read that Kneale always thought of him as a bad choice to play his most important fictional character. "Quartermass 2" is an exciting horror/Sci-Fi classic with loads of tension and an enormous body count (especially considering it's a 1950's film!). All I can say is: Go see this film! You certainly won't regret the purchase.
