Prom Dates left me with a mix of frustration, confusion, and a sense of missed opportunity. From the outset, the movie struggled with casting choices. While the main actors delivered performances within their limited scope, the overall ensemble felt misaligned, as if the characters weren’t fully suited to the story they were meant to inhabit. This miscasting was compounded by a screenplay that clearly overreached, attempting to expand a simple high school comedy premise into something overly ambitious, yet failing to execute it effectively.
The central issue lies in the screenplay itself. A strong comedy relies on timing, pacing, and relatable characters, yet this film seemed to misunderstand the very essence of its genre. The main actress, already familiar from High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, took every moment to a hyperbolic extreme. Where subtlety or charm might have served the story, her over-the-top delivery dominated the screen, leaving scenes feeling forced and artificial. Her performance, meant to carry the narrative, ultimately weighed it down.
The director did what could be done under the circumstances, and it’s important to acknowledge that directing a weak script is a difficult task. They staged scenes competently and ensured technical elements like cinematography and editing were serviceable, but even these efforts couldn’t compensate for a fundamentally flawed narrative. The pacing suffered greatly as a result, with comedic beats landing inconsistently and dramatic moments feeling hollow. In many ways, the film’s failure was structural — rooted in writing choices rather than execution alone.
Additionally, the humor felt misplaced. Instead of clever, situational comedy or relatable teen moments, the jokes were overbearing, repetitive, and at times grating. The film attempts to be high-energy and lighthearted, but the effect is exhausting rather than entertaining. Moments that should have been charming or heartwarming were buried beneath exaggerated reactions and awkward dialogue.
That said, there were glimmers of potential. Certain supporting characters showed promise, and there were moments where the direction and set design hinted at what could have been a fun, colorful high school comedy. Unfortunately, these moments were too fleeting to leave any lasting impact.
In conclusion, Prom Dates is a film that fails to meet even modest expectations for a teen comedy. It is overacted, poorly paced, and miscast in critical areas. While the technical aspects are competent and the performers do what they can with the material, the screenplay ultimately undermines every effort. I cannot recommend this film — it is frustrating, exhausting, and ultimately a waste of time. For anyone seeking a genuinely entertaining high school comedy, there are far better options available.
