My concerns prior were eradicated

I was in two minds about watching this, because i wasn't sure of it's intentions, and whether it was actually more than voyeurism and distasteful broadcasting. I also am aware that Huw Edwards was not consulted in the construction of the drama, and I know there are multiple ways in which media can present a depiction of 'real-life' cases/events.However, unlike quite a few other reviewers on here, I was incredibly impressed by the way the drama portrayed coercive control, and the many elements that enabled this awful manipulative, and abusive relationship to develop. I have unfortunately been in a relationship in which I experienced years of coercive control, and although my circumstances (as are everyone's) individual, I found the creators of this dramatisation had a clear and accurate understanding of the psychological complexity of these relationships, and how highly destructive they are to the abused in numerous ways. The cast were well chosen and, i thought, excellent in their roles. I sense they were all very aware of the responsibility they had by agreeing to be part of this programme, and this ensured they inhabited their role with as much insight and sensitivity as possible. It wasn't (as I worried in anticipation of watching the drama) salacious or gratuitous.I hope that this dramatisation, even if not from contribution from all those involved (and, to be honest, when you learn of the actual things Edwards was found guilty of and the messages between him and the boy/guy he abused, i do think that he's a narcissist, who for decades got to control the narrative, and for him to be given any power in this depiction would have result in something that did a disservice to the victims), helps to provide greater understanding of this type of relationship, and makes more people able to recognise when they are developing, so we can protect both ourselves and others.

Short, but effective and unsettling true life dramatisation

STAR RATING: ***** Brilliant **** Very Good *** Okay ** Poor * AwfulIn September 2022, the nation was in shock at the news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II, which was announced by veteran news reader Huw Edwards (Martin Clunes), who also oversaw coverage of her live funeral, which endeared him to the nation. But behind the scenes, he was engaged in an online grooming scandal with seventeen year old Ryan (Osian Morgan), which was eventually exposed by The Sun, and sent his career into a downward spiral. In the aftermath of the Jimmy Savile scandal, historical accusations of sexual misconduct against megastars of years gone by crept from the word work, leading to convictions that rocked the nation, but stars from more recent times, notably the likes of Russell Brand, have also made headlines, as well as the scandal around 'national treasure' Huw Edwards, which this one-off, compressed drama delves into.As the driving force of the affair, Clunes truly delivers a stellar performance as Edwards, capturing his accent and mannerisms down to a tee, and the script makes a true monster out of him, a manipulative, narcissistic character, with little nuance or underlying complexity to his actions. In spite the seriousness of his conviction, he managed to avoid a custodial sentence, which many found inexplicable given what happened to other public figures in the same situation.Much like 2023's Savile drama The Reckoning, there has been some furore about whether it comes too soon after Edwards's conviction. It is doubtlessly an uneasy and unsettling piece, worth watching regardless for the strong performances and shattering attention to detail. ****

Excellent drama but very uncomfortable to watch

Clunes was superb as the lead actor who played the part of the predator superbly.I don't understand the negative reviews. This story highlighted perfectly how those in power with evil intent can just get away with anything. This reminded me so much of Finding Neverland and how the poor families are stuck in a cycle of despair too with little they can do. I have never listened to any of his music since and never will.I thought the writing, direction and storytelling was spot on.Excellent performances from all cast members.I was so glad to read at the end that "Ryan" had rebuilt his life. This story should never have happened in the first place and we can only hope that lessons have been learnt, but sadly I doubt it.Well done Channel 5.
