Plot summary

Włodek is a middle-aged man stuck in a dead-end job at the local library who lives with his harridan wife and critical in-laws in a small apartment. When Włodek draws the interest of a library patron, the beautiful young woman encourages him to strive for better things in his life and professional career. Together, the two take off for a three-day affair, but surprises could await Włodek upon his return home.

Life Among the Polish Chattering Classes

A satire on contemporary Polish mores - which like 'L'Age d'Or' begins with a wildlife documentary in black & while - on this telling on the subject of sharks. What follows is effectively a follow-up to 'Knife in the Water' in which we find Zygmunt Malanowicz - who played the young hitchhiker in the original - a visibly older but certainly far from wiser man now in a rut as an office worker.

Polish sex comedy about male fear

A librarian and would-be writer/translator with a stifling home life falls for a young 'Siren' he meets at a party, who then slowly starts to take over his work and life. Director Andrzej Wajda's 1969 feature film, with a screenplay by Janusz Glowacki (from his short story), almost reads like the gender politics tinged nightmare of a budding male writer having his masculinity (physical and intellectual) challenged. In this sense the film could be read as a misogynist kind of Polish sex comedy about male fear and insecurity. Nevertheless it's a reasonably lively and enjoyable satire (featuring a hilarious axe scene involving a sculptor), with a constant sense of the writer being trapped, then moulded, before finally ending up as a human fly trapped between (and by) the women in his life.
