I used to love this show, but its gone to pot. Maybe it has become stale but sadly it lost its appeal when Joel was replaced by that limp non entity actor.

An enjoyable comeback & ending to the series

I have a suspicion that, despite it not being mentioned on IMDb, the four protagonist actors as executive producers really helped make this film show the characters at their best! For example, the replacement of Stylax with Jason in the series left my wife and I struggling through seasons 4 and 5 due to Jason's unlovable womanising and uselessness. He had at least improved by the time the series had ended. The film, however, absolutely saved his character! The format was good, with no part of the story feeling boring or irrelevant. The story itself was at times as predictable as a usual Plebs episode. But, there were some twists brought about by characters growing in different ways, and it was no less entertaining than the series. We appreciated the false-contrast of morals & ethics between the "Barbarians" and Roman empire, resulting in humorous lack of self-awareness on both sides. The production was good, and while of course not at the level of gritty Hollywood fantasy epics, at no point did it feel like just a set - we were able to suspend our disbelief the whole way through.

National Lampoon style fratboy comedy

In the 1950s, using a comedy ensemble to make fun of war was a huge deal. A worldwide trend, in fact. This effort brings to mind the "CARRY ON" series that was a hit in England 3/4 of century ago. Nothing is to be taken seriously, there is no danger or jeopardy for the leads at any point, everything can and will be turned into a joke, and each character is a stereotype of some kind. There is nothing wrong with this type of film, there is indeed a market for it, but praising it as if were a sequel to MATRIX or LORD OF THE RINGS is pushing the envelope just a mite. Forgettable, light, frothy and fun. That's what your ticket gets you. ((Designated "IMDb Top Reviewer."
