Plot summary

Ann Schuyler is an upper-crust socialite who bullies her reporter husband into conforming to her highfalutin ways. The husband chafes at the confinement of high society, though, and yearns for a creative outlet. He decides to write a play and collaborates with a fellow reporter.

Stock archetypes and class divide are at the

Stock archetypes and class divide are at the centre of Platinum Blonde; there's very little to laugh at throughout the film, but it's hardly much of a drama either. The dialogue, intended to be witty, is rather strained, at times almost sophomoric. Granted, there were a few moments where I giggled due to certain expressions having unfortunate connotations nowadays. Depression-era seduction with very little in the way of complexity. The direction, more akin to a stage play, feels rather unadventurous and locked down, although there were a few shots I could point to as being somewhat interesting. Despite some entertaining performances, the film is hindered by a meandering screenplay that gives the actors little to work with, one that feels like a first draft, ultimately rendering Platinum Blonde as positively unengaging. If I wanted to see rich people being facetious, I'd watch Monty Python's Upper Class Twit of the Year.

I watched this movie for the first time

I watched this movie for the first time yesterday evening , & say that I would sit through it again to see the nuances Frank Capra probably probably put in it. It's early Capra & early Harlow & you can see the potential in both. Harlow glowed as the blond but Loretta Young also in an early role was excellent. The Pre-Code designation left me confused; was it because lead actor Robert Williams kissed Loretta Young at the end before his divorce from Harlow in the film? Yawn to the Hays Code ! Williams was the stenght in this film but I had never ehard of him, so I researched what could have happened. He died 3 days after the film premiered . Peritonitis, and 5 years later the actor who played the Editor of the paper also died of the same thing , and then a year later Harlow of kidney failure. All before antibiotics, so we are blessed with modern meds. Watch the film, you will most likely like it. Cinematography is among the best I have seen.
