Whoever thought that this scenario needed to be shot and especially with these actors, need to have their heads examined.

It's not very often you can claim one performance almost single-handedly sinks the whole movie, but this is one of those rare occasions. There's no way around it - Ashton Kutcher is really, really bad in this movie. I mean REALLY bad. So bad that I questioned on more than one occasion if his character was meant to be mentally challenged. He has zero charisma and spends most of his time staring into space with a menacing glint in his eye. It doesn't help that he is asked to spend a good chunk of the movie dressed in a chicken costume. Don't ask. Thankfully, he has Pfeiffer as his leading lady, and she is able to breathe whatever humanity she can into the proceedings. But even she should have seen some of the roadblocks ahead. Kutcher repeatedly communicates with a deaf character not only without sign language but facing away from his so there's no way to read lips. The ending is so implausible that it's almost headache-inducing. Pfeiffer works so rarely, it's criminal that her time is wasted on disappointments like this and NEW YEAR'S EVE, which was released two years later and also co-starred Kutcher. I think a restraining order is not out of the question.

Kutcher and Pfeiffer are excellent. And as a character tale more than anything else, such is delivered. Low intensity and relatable... The thing I didn't like is making the deaf son either also a psychopath who shoots everyone, or a low-functioning mind. This dude was told multiple times to stop shooting people and throwing shit into windows....then later he shoots again. Fuck that motherfucker. Deaf people can also be assholes who should be in prison long before when, say, this dangerous asshole ass was after a final tantrum. (and I don't mean "tantrum" via deaf people being akin to stupid people, though that is a trope. I mean that character was a whining bitch who rejects helpers and just wants to pop a cap in some ass." But...I mean my real rating would be 3 and 1/2 of a star. But idiots kneejerking such maybe not even seeing it or appreciating the dynamics of that relationship, born of pain really.... So I'd like to give it five stars to counter such assholes. But no, 3 1/2. I value objective results even if for any reason they don't agree with my take. Good movie!!! Except for that deaf asshole kid. Pfieffer should've instead had a corgi or siamese who Kutcher would teach the fine wrasslin arts to. And sure that might just be a writer's "that's the way things might go", but seems a bit gratuitous to me. Not as gratuitous of the final episode of Burn Notice. Nothing could ever be that indefensible.
