Plot summary

Makoto Yuki and his allies have grown through the bonds they have formed and partings they have experienced. Using the power of Persona, they continue to fight to put an end to the Dark Hour, in hope that there are peaceful days waiting for them at the end of the battle. However, as the season shifts to winter, memories from ten years ago resurface and a boy believed to be their friend warns the members of S.E.E.S. that "The Fall"— an event that will destroy all of humanity is near, leaving the group with a difficult choice to be made by New Year’s Eve.

Time never waits. It delivers all equally to the same end.

This is the last of four movies retelling the story of the video game Persona 3 (the original, not Persona 3 Reload). As such, it is mostly faithful to the game, with some changes. It is the longest of the four, and has the same director as the second one, which it also is most similar to.The art style is the same as earlier, but more effort has been put in this time, with exquisite beauty in almost every frame. The winter snow is used to create sharp contrasts or to change to an almost monochrome colour scale. In one scene, red light colours it. Advanced light effects are used purposefully to accentuate story beats, similar to how movies by the director Shinkai Makoto do it sometimes.Following the pile-up of earlier setbacks, the mood is extremely depressing. It has one of the longest and most intense depictions of depression that I have seen in anime, with a few other candidates existing. This is fitting for the Persona series, which has borrowed concepts and even its name from psychology. Because of its extremity, it is the most unique and interesting part. The omission of most side quests, so called "social links", with external characters, and the resulting focus on the heartbroken persona users accentuates the desolation. There are already many people involved, so it is natural that side characters who are not active in the main plot are excluded, except for Easter egg cameos.Surprisingly, the exact side quest that I had been looking forward to is included, and promoted to be an important part of the main story, leading to one of the most beautiful and moving scenes.Contrary to the darkened mood, there are one or two small but cruel details from the game that have been made more lenient and unclear. So small that I didn't notice them the first time, but I'm irritated about how the story lost its clarity. For a finale, not much time is spent on battles, which is fine. But there is at least one antagonist that stands out with cool design, monologue and theme music. It is remarkable how often someone will talk at the protagonist Makoto for a long time, explaining his personality to him, without him answering at all. Well, this can seen in real life sometimes, so it is not actually unrealistic. It is a residue from his role as a silent JRPG protagonist, and is something that one can get used to. It is the kind of movie where the secondary characters are more fierce and colourful. As the last in a series of movies, adapted from a game that few have played, even fewer will see this one, which is a pity.
